What is resolution ?

In printing, the notion of resolution is essential : it definies the amount of information given for each dot of the picture. It is given in « dots per inck » or in dots per line.
For a high resolution, the quality of the printing is better. When sending files by mail a low resolution is better while for photo printing you will need high resolution image.


What is a pixel ?

A pixel is a luminous dot representing a picture on your screen. If these dots are small and close to each other, the resolution will be high. On the contrary, if they are big the resolution will be low.


Formats de fichiers pour la photo numérique ?

Jpeg : a good compromise.
The jpeg format offer a remarquable quality. This format compresses the pictures which means you will lose a part of the information. So you will need to choose an average compression.

Tiff : the quality.
Most designers choose this format to preserve the quality of the picture but these files are very heavy.

Raw
The raw picture is the one that you will find in the sensor. Keeping this format will enable you to have a file close to the original picture. This option is found in high quality cameras.


My printer refuses to print !

• Check your printer is plugged in and connected correctly.
• Check that your printer has been selected by computer.
• You may have some heavy files which you will have to cancel in the waiting list of your printer.


My paper will not go through the printer !

• Some printers might need to be in automatic printing.
• Check that the paper is flat and is not causing any problems to be conveyed into the printer.
• Check the positionning of your paper in the printer. If you still meet problems, try introducing the sheets manually.


The colours of my picture don’t correspond to the ones on the screen !

• Your screen and your printer don’t have some colour span. You can change the colours by using another software or by changing the settings on your printer software.
• Check your ink cartridges.
• Check your paper is adapted to your work.
• Clean your printing heads on your printer.


The outlines of my picture are not clean !

• Your resolution might be too low. The pixels are too big. In order to obtain a cleaner finish, try a higher resolution by reducing the size of the picture or rescanning the picture.


The ink has run !

• Check you have printed on the right side.
• Check the resolution is given to the driver and that it is compatible with the paper.
